Water's Edge

This expressive relief piece was forged from a heavy steel bar and round rod stock. Many of the soft shapes were achieved using a wooden mallet dipped in water versus normal hardened tool steel hammers. A frequent challenge was the mallet catching fire, requiring additional dunks in the quenching bucket.

The piece was inspired by reflections seen on the surface of a pond.  In this image, the reflections of the abstract trees on the surface of the water as it meets the shore are the primary elements, as the actual trees on the shore, which are not pictured.
