Grayson Highlands

This expressive piece was inspired by a natural hiking area in the Appalachian Mountains of southwestern Virginia. At these higher elevations the vegetation seemed slightly unique, in that I found many of the trees and shrubs grew closer to the ground. It was as if they were hugging the ground, revealing only small pockets and niches where their trunks were exposed.

This unglazed ceramic relief piece was constructed with white and three subtly different shades of orange clay. This piece relies heavily on shadows cast from the shapes to create texture, contribute to its expression, and define the strong visual design of the image.
